CAREER & WORK

Labor department to suspend Job Corps centers – The U.S. Department of Labor announced plans to suspend operations at contractor-run Job Corps centers nationwide by June 30, 2025. The program, costing taxpayers over $1.7 billion per year, has also been linked to numerous safety incidents, including reports of violence and drug use. The suspension aims to reassess the program's effectiveness and align it with modern workforce development goals.
U.S. jobless claims rise – In the week ending May 24, 2025, initial jobless claims in the U.S. increased by 14,000 to a seasonally adjusted 240,000 exceeding economists' forecasts of 230,000. This marks the highest level in a month and suggests a modest softening in the labor market. The uptick is attributed to factors such as recent tariffs and economic uncertainties impacting employment.
Gen Z woman's strategy for landing her dream job – Hali Jama, a 22-year-old graduate, has gone viral after sharing the interview techniques that helped her secure her dream job. Her approach, emphasizing authenticity and thorough preparation, resonated with many young professionals navigating the job market. Jama's story highlights the evolving strategies Gen Z employs to stand out in competitive employment landscapes.
ECONOMY & FINANCE

US strong against debt – Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent affirmed that the United States will "never default" on its debt obligations, even as Congress approaches a critical deadline to raise the federal debt ceiling. Bessent emphasized that the administration's budget, despite projections of increasing the deficit by $3 trillion over the next decade, aims to spur economic growth and reduce the deficit through new import tariffs and other measures.
Indian tech fund aims to emulate 1990s silicon valley growth – Panvira, a new India-based tech-focused hedge fund, is set to launch in January 2026 with plans to raise $200 million in foreign capital. The fund aims to invest in India's burgeoning public tech sector, drawing parallels to the growth seen in 1990s Silicon Valley and 2000s China. This launch signifies renewed foreign interest in India's tech sector, potentially offering Gen Z and millennial investors new avenues for growth in emerging markets.
Trump doubles steel and aluminum tariffs to 50% – President Donald Trump announced plans to double tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from 25% to 50%, effective June 4. The move aims to bolster the domestic steel industry but has drawn criticism from economists, U.S. businesses, and international leaders. The tariff hike may lead to higher consumer prices and strain international trade relations, potentially impacting global economic stability.

BIG THINK: AI Revolutionizing Medicine or Risking Trust?

Artificial intelligence is increasingly integral to modern healthcare, offering advancements in diagnostics, treatment personalization, and administrative efficiency. A breakthrough study recently introduced an AI test for prostate cancer that can predict which men with high-risk, non-metastatic prostate cancer will benefit from treatment with abiraterone—helping reduce unnecessary interventions and side effects.
In India, a leading hospital has deployed AI-powered diagnostic equipment that enhances interpretation of imaging results and helps in early detection of diseases like tuberculosis and pneumonia. These systems are also being studied as models for broader deployment in rural and underserved areas.
Closer to home, AI is being used to automate clinical documentation. Doctors across the U.S. are now using “ambient listening” AI scribes that record and summarize patient visits, significantly reducing time spent on paperwork and allowing physicians to focus more directly on care.
But the growing use of AI in healthcare isn't without controversy. The White House recently released a document—intended to defend anti-vaccine activist RFK Jr.—that was riddled with fabricated citations and nonsensical text. The document, known as the “MAHA Report,” was apparently written using generative AI and raised red flags about AI’s reliability in public health communications.
Beyond misinformation risks, critics are also concerned about over-automation. Delegating medical records, triage, and even diagnoses to AI could jeopardize patient safety and privacy, especially if oversight or ethical frameworks fall behind.
Actionable Insights:
Validate AI outputs in medicine: Hospitals and providers must set up clear human-in-the-loop checks for AI-generated diagnostics, reports, and records to prevent errors or over-reliance.
Defend patient data: Any healthcare AI system should be vetted for HIPAA compliance and data security, with transparency about how patient information is stored, shared, and protected.
