AI & TECH

NASA and Google Build AI Doctor for Deep Space – NASA is partnering with Google to create an AI medical assistant that can guide astronauts through diagnosing and treating health issues on Moon and Mars missions without real-time Earth support. The Crew Medical Officer Digital Assistant (CMO-DA) processes speech, text, and images via Google Cloud’s Vertex AI, scoring up to 88% accuracy in trials for ankle injuries, ear pain, and flank pain. Next steps include integrating medical device data and training for microgravity-specific conditions.

Tesla Refocuses AI Chip Strategy – Tesla will streamline AI chip development to concentrate on its AI5, AI6, and future inference chips, CEO Elon Musk said, following reports the in-house Dojo supercomputer team is being disbanded. Musk argued splitting resources between two distinct AI chip designs no longer made sense. The shift aligns with Tesla’s broader push into self-driving technology and robotics, with next-gen chips expected to power vehicles, humanoid robots, and potentially wider AI applications.

Pinterest Plays Long Game on AI Shopping – Pinterest CEO Bill Ready says the “agentic web,” where AI shops entirely on users’ behalf, is still far off. He positions Pinterest as an AI-enabled shopping assistant, offering proactive, personalized recommendations much like a personal shopper.

Apple Sued Over Apple Pay Tech – A Texas company alleges Apple stole trade secrets from mobile wallet developer CorFire, acquired by Fintiv in 2014, to create Apple Pay. The lawsuit claims Apple used confidential meetings and ex-CorFire employees to launch the service, generating billions without compensation.

CAREER & WORK

NWS to Rehire 450 Weather Experts – The U.S. National Weather Service will restore 450 meteorologists, hydrologists, and radar technicians, reversing most of the staffing cuts made under the Department of Government Efficiency. Lawmakers say the move addresses vacancies that have strained forecasting operations during a summer of extreme weather. A bipartisan bill aims to make the positions permanent to safeguard public safety.

India Seeks Global Rules to Stop Pilot Poaching – India is urging the U.N.’s aviation agency to adopt a “code of conduct” to curb foreign airlines from hiring its pilots and crew without notice, warning the practice disrupts growth plans and drains training resources. The move follows heightened scrutiny after a fatal Air India crash.

Canada Loses 40,800 Jobs in July – Canada’s labor market shed 40,800 positions in July, erasing June’s gains as U.S. steel, aluminum, and auto tariffs hit manufacturing. Youth unemployment rose to 14.6%, its highest in over a decade outside pandemic years, while overall joblessness stayed at 6.9%.

ECONOMY & FINANCE

US Gold Futures Surge to Record on Tariff Fears – After a customs ruling signaled that the most widely traded gold bullion bars could face country-specific tariffs, U.S. gold futures climbed to a record high of $3,534.10. The uncertainty has already led some suppliers to halt shipments to the U.S., with Switzerland confirming ongoing talks with Washington. Analysts warn the move could disrupt global gold supply chains and weaken New York’s role as a futures trading hub.

Imports Slide as Tariff Uncertainty Bites – Newly published National Retail Federation data for June shows U.S. imports fell more than expected, down 8.4% year-over-year, as shifting tariff policies unsettled retailers. The report, released August 8, highlights concerns that rising duties—now as high as 50% for some countries—could mean fewer product choices and higher prices for consumers heading into the holiday season.

Tech Gains Lift Wall Street – U.S. stocks climbed Friday, with the S&P 500 up 0.8% as Apple rose 4.6% after boosting U.S. investment plans. Weaker economic data fueled rate cut expectations—now pegged at 90% for September—while investors weighed Trump’s interim Fed pick.

VC & FUNDING

Seattle’s Loopr Snags $5.4M for AI QC – Seattle-based Loopr raised $5.4M to expand its AI-powered, hardware-agnostic quality control software for manufacturers. Led by Growth Warrior Capital, the round backs Loopr’s push into aerospace, automotive, and chemical sectors.

Harmattan Aims for $200M Defence Tech Push – Paris-based Harmattan AI, dubbed the “Anduril of Europe,” is seeking $200M to scale AI-powered battlefield drones. Having already raised $30M from FirstMark and Atlantic Labs, it plans high-volume production and major NATO contracts.

BIG THINK

Medicine's Next Frontier: Will We Let AI Diagnose Us Without a Human?

Imagine a world where your doctor isn’t a flesh-and-blood human but an AI so advanced it can diagnose, triage, even empathize. AI tools like ChatGPT‑5 already assist in detecting cancer in remote regions, pushing the envelope of accessible care. But would you truly trust that “digital doctor” with your health?

Surveys suggest hesitation still reigns. A recent poll found that while more than one-third of Americans use AI for health guidance—researching symptoms, meal plans, or mental wellness—they still trust human doctors far more (93%) over AI-generated advice. Another study revealed that although many U.S. clinicians embrace AI (68%), nearly half assert that confidence in AI hinges on human oversight—reminding us that AI as a helper, not a substitute, is the preferred path.

That subtle balance isn’t surprising. Even when AI outperforms doctors in diagnostic accuracy, people remain wary. They prefer decisions with human nuance—particularly in healthcare, where empathy, intuition, and accountability matter deeply. The phenomenon is mirrored in psychology: “algorithm aversion” describes how people often distrust algorithmic advice more than human input—even when the algorithm is demonstrably more precise. Moreover, the risks are real. Google’s Med‑Gemini, marketed for healthcare, once hallucinated medical details—like diagnosing an infarct in a nonexistent “basilar ganglia”—raising alarms about unchecked AI errors in clinical contexts.

That mix of hesitation and possibility is where healthcare now stands. The doubts are justified, and the risks undeniable—but so is the promise. With careful design and clear oversight, AI could accelerate diagnoses in underserved regions, support clinicians in making sharper decisions, and free them to focus on the empathy and human connection only they can provide. Guided by ethics, transparency, and a partnership mindset, it may become not a replacement for medical judgment, but a trusted extension of it—bringing quality care to more people, more quickly, than we ever thought possible.

Actionable Insights

  1. Design AI to support—not supplant—clinicians: Ensure systems offer real-time explanations, enable easy human oversight, and serve as collaborators in care rather than replacements.

  2. Build trust through transparency and feedback: Share how AI arrives at its conclusions, involve clinicians and patients in design feedback, and invest in governance that actively evolves with use.
